Review: The Bro-Magnet

bromag1“The Bro-Magnet” by Lauren Baratz-Logsted (contemporary, TKA Distribution, December 2011, $4.99, 757kb): This is one of those books that generated a great deal of buzz online – much of it positive. I admit I was intrigued. After all, this story is told entirely from the male perspective. It sounded different, and I love to check out books that are different. They might not always works so well, but they are often entertaining. And boy, this book is entertaining. It is funny, charming and odd, and it has much to say about the differences between men and women.

Johnny Smith is a guy that men love and that women don’t. He loves sports, is a fan of old cars, often makes stupid decisions, is a house painter and has never had a serious relationship with a woman. Now in his thirties, he has been a best man countless times as his male friends keep finding love, but is still alone. Johnny wants nothing more than to find someone to love, despite the fact that he believes it is unlikely that he will. After all, ever since he killed his mother (according to his aunt) shortly after his birth, women have had very little use for him.

Review: The Male Stripper & The Stranger

E_TheMaleStripper_250"The Male Stripper (Red Hot Fantasies)" (erotica, self-published/Edge of Ecstasy, December 2011, $0.99, 42pp) and "The Stranger (Red Hot Fantasies)" (erotica, self-published/Edge of Ecstasy, January 2012, $0.99, 30pp) by Opal Carew

Opal Carew has a new erotica series featuring several women friends who each fulfill their deepest fantasies. Each woman's fantasy is detailed in a very brief story. I would consider these stories to be erotica rather than erotic romance as there is little-to-no character development and no happy ending (well, I guess that depends on your definition of a happy ending).

The first story is "The Male Stripper" and has Becca's fantasy of getting down and dirty with a gorgeous and hot male stripper that she hired for a friend's bachelorette party. But she gets a little bit more than she bargained for when Cal the stripper returns to her house later that evening with his friend Don in tow. Not only do they fulfill Becca's fantasy, but also Don's – which involves a female client getting frisky during an audition. A night of sexy dancing and erotic pleasure ensues with the three.

Review: Pulled Long

PulledLongmed“Pulled Long” by Christine d’Abo (contemporary, erotic, m/m, Carina, December 2011, $3.99, 30,000 words):

Series: Long Shots

  • "Double Shot" - Sadie & Paul
  • "A Shot in the Dark" - Paige & Carter
  • "Pulled Long" - Ian & Jeff

I don’t read much m/m erotic romance. However, Christine d’Abo’s “Pulled Long” is a part of a series that I have really enjoyed. The series features siblings Sadie, Paige and Ian Long who run a coffee shop together. Since the first book “Double Shot,” Ian has been flirting with a blue-eyed stranger, making it rather impossible for me not to read his story. “Pulled Long” is a very hot and sexy romance that makes me believe that I might have to read more m/m in the future.

Review: The Lesson Plan

JackieBarbosa_TheLessonPlan_800px-682x1024“The Lesson Plan” by Jackie Barbosa (historical, erotic, December 2011, Circe Press, $2.99, 22,500 words/64pp)

I’ve read several of Jackie Barbosa’s historical novellas over the past several months. Her books are set during the Regency period, my favorite time period for historical romances, and they have an intense eroticism that titillates. As such, I jumped at the chance to review Barbosa’s recent release, “The Lesson Plan,” the first story in the Lords of Lancashire trilogy. While I have way too many books that I have committed to read, I could not resist reading this one as soon as it hit my inbox.

Review: Melt

Melt“Melt” by Natalie Anderson (contemporary, Entangled, December 2011, $2.99, 97pp): When I noticed that Entangled was looking for people who could commit to a quick read and review of Natalie Anderson’s “Melt,” I couldn’t resist. I was very impressed by Anderson’s “Dating and Other Dangers” which I read earlier this year (unfortunately, this hasn’t been released in the U.S. yet). This led me to read more about “Melt,” a romance that takes place in Antarctica. I liked the sound of it. And I’m glad that I did. “Melt” is a great holiday read that is perfect for readers during this cold, holiday season (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at any rate).

Review: Revenge Sex

RevengeSexmed“Revenge Sex” by Jasmine Haynes (erotic, self-published, December 2011, $2.99, 511kb): Have you ever read a book that you really couldn’t make your mind up about? It is a bizarre feeling, but this is exactly what I’m feeling at the moment after reading Jasmine Haynes’ self-published, erotic romance “Revenge Sex: A West Coast Hotwifing Novel: Book1.” I can’t say that I’m terribly surprised by my reaction because I bought this one knowing I wasn’t sure about the premise. There is lots of stuff in this book that doesn’t work for me, but Haynes did convince me that it all worked for Clay (the hero).

Review: Caught

CASSANDRACARR_CAUGHT_coversm“Caught” by Cassandra Carr (erotic, Loose Id, December 2011, $4.99, 373kb): Looking for a sexy, holiday read with BDSM elements? Definitely consider Cassandra Carr’s “Caught,” a story of Jack, a dominant, reunited with Callie, his one-time submissive. When Callie returns to her home town for the holidays three years after leaving Jack and their relationship, the two run into each other and fall back into their previous roles. Their relationship heats up very quickly.

The crux of the conflict in “Caught,” like in so many romance novels, has to do with love. Callie left Jack because she had fallen in love with him and was sure that Jack did not return her feelings. This left things between the two unresolved, a situation that Callie definitely planned to deal with on her trip home.

Review: Unwrapped

CQ_Unwrapped_coverlg“Unwrapped” by Cari Quinn (erotic, Loose Id, December 2011, $7.99, 409kb, ebook): Caitlyn is about to turn 25 and is still a virgin. She decides to ask her two best friends if either of them would be interested in helping her change that status. This is how Cari Quinn’s latest erotic romance, “Unwrapped,” begins. While this is an extremely sexy story that has a great holiday tone, I did have some small issues with some of the plot devices. But overall, "Unwrapped" was an enjoyably hot read.

Unbeknownst to Cait, Tristan and Matt both have deep feelings for her and would be more than happy to relieve her of her virginity. But they also have feelings for each other. When Cait is ready to make her move, she is shocked to find Tristan and Matt in bed together. She is turned on by their lovemaking, but is also very hurt that they kept their relationship from her.
