Armed with only her father’s stories of a forgotten da Vinci workshop, a mechanically enhanced falcon, and an Italian cook, Amelia takes flight for Florence, Italy. But her quest is altered when her kitecycle crashes into the air ship of ex–Air Marshal—and scandalous dime novel hero—Tucker Gentry.
Challenged by political unrest, a devious sky pirate, and their own sizzling attraction, Amelia and Tuck are dragged into an international conspiracy that could change the course of history…again.
“Her Sky Cowboy” by Beth Ciotta is the first novel in a new series, The Glorious Victorious Darcys. It’s heroine, Amelia Darcy is not interested in marriage. Unfortunately, her mother doesn’t feel the same way. While Amelia suffers through lunch with her mother and an eligible bachelor, she can’t help but wish she was at home helping her father. She loves her father and his inventions. When her father dies and leaves them penniless, Amelia vows to find a way to help support her family financially. She also wants to prove to everyone that her dad wasn’t a kook.
When a tournament invitation arrives for her and her two brothers, Amelia feels that this is her chance to help her family. The quest calls for each participant to discover an invention of historical importance in order to win the prize money. Amelia remembers her father telling her stories about an old workshop of Leonardo da Vinci. She knows there’s got to be an important invention there, so she sets out to Italy using her kitecycle to find this treasure.
Tucker Gentry is an ex-Air Marshal who has been declared an outlaw and is wanted in America. He is now known for his special ‘delivery’ services. He is trying to save money to clear his name in America and have his sister, Lily, join him. When Amelia’s kitecycle crashes into Tucker’s airship, she finds herself face to face with her favorite dime novel hero. She is fascinated by his colorful crew and the mechanics of his airship. She lies to him telling him she’s going to visit her sick grandfather. Tucker agrees to let her tag along. Even though he knows it’s a bad idea having a woman on the ship, he can’t bear to turn this beauty away.
When a dangerous sky pirate raids Tucker’s ship and kidnaps Amelia, he knows that there’s more to her story than she admitted. True to his nature, he can’t leave Amelia with the sky pirate so he rescues her. As a result, she confides in him the true reason for her adventure. Amelia is cousins with the famous Briscoe Darcy, who is known for time travel. Tucker wonders if Amelia is after something to help time travel. If so, he sees this as a way to help clear his name. They have to make sure they stay clear of the sky pirate and whoever hired him to find Amelia. They both admitted to each other that they were not interested in marriage. However, all of the time spent together leaves them with feelings of unspoken love. Now there’s nothing they wouldn’t do to help each other succeed and stay safe.
Even though this story takes place in 1887, modern appliances and technology are mentioned throughout the story. It was a little confusing at first with all of the technology descriptions and the types of different people. There are people that have traveled back in time, some that are interested in new technology, some that are not, and some people that have special types of powers and choose not to let ‘normal’ people know. However, it is interesting reading how all of the different time periods interact with each other. Tucker and Amelia try not to show their true feelings for each other, but they’re unsuccessful in keeping this hidden.
