ALL BETS ARE OFF
Genevieve Camden is no stranger to Leo’s seductive ways. Years ago she was fooled into believing that he cared about her…and now that he’s back on the ballroom floor, he appears to be making amends. But this time Genny knows better: A scoundrel never changes his stripes—not even one as charming and handsome as Leo. Unless maybe he’s been in love with her all along…?
“Wicked Nights with a Proper Lady” by Tiffany Clare is an intriguing book. It is a historical, set in England featuring a lord and a lady’s companion – who have a past. When the scandalous Countess of Fallon (aka Jez) loses her abusive husband, she is left penniless. Her best friends, including Leo Harrow, Earl of Barrington, hatch a bizarre plan to prevent the new Earl of Farrow from marrying. This plot involves a bet, a flirtation with an innocent debutante and so much more. As part of the plan, Leo is brought face to face with the woman he once planned to marry, Genevieve Camden.
Genny and Leo were once lovers back when Genny was on the marriage mart. But after Leo fled the house party where he and Genny had become close, Genny was devastated. Having experienced love, she could not accept any of the few offers for her hand that she received and instead became a lady’s companion. When she and Leo meet again, Genny is acting as companion and chaperone to her younger cousin, Lady Charlotte. While Charlotte and Genny get along fairly well, Genny is only barely tolerated and is expected to tow the family line – which is to see Charlotte married to the new Earl of Farrow.
Leo’s original plans change quickly once he spies Genny again. He quickly learns that his ardor for her hasn’t abated in the years that they’ve been apart. Understandably, Genny is very reluctant to get involved with Leo again though. After all, he took her virginity, but never proposed. He is a known rake. But he pursues Genny with a single-minded purpose.
Now, I enjoyed this book. I thought the plot involving Jez and her friends (the rogues of the Dangerous Rogues series, I imagine) was complicated, but compelling. Jez is a fascinating woman who has had a difficult life (and experiences trauma in this book too). However, there were times that I wanted to smack Leo. For a rich lord who lives his life as he pleases, he was exceedingly vague and wishy-washy when it came to planning a future.
At one point, he actually asks Genny what she wants from him. Keep in mind that this conversation happens after they have resumed their affair. Leo hasn’t given her any hint about his feelings for her – or given her any reason to think that he is thinking about marriage. He left her after their first affair, without any word. Seriously, what did he think she expected?
I was worried for a little bit because of this reticence of Leo’s. Could he redeem himself enough? Would he prove himself worthy of Genny’s love? Fortunately, he did. I was impressed with Leo’s decision to reveal his part in the bet to Genny himself. This so very rarely happens. To me, this action made Leo’s feelings and hopes for the future clear. Ultimately, his foibles made Leo a more fascinating hero.
“Wicked Nights with a Proper Lady” is a gem of a romance. The romance is sexy and tension filled with an enticing glimpse of the next story in the series. I am quite hooked on this new series and can’t wait to see how the series arc is eventually resolved.
