lords_fall-186x300Romance Novel News is excited to host an interview with author Thea Harrison whose latest book, “Lord’s Fall” is out today. We highly recommend all of the books in the Elder Races series. Want to win a copy of a Thea Harrison book? Read on to find out how . . .

Thanks for having me on your blog today! I’m excited to be here with you.

Q: Your latest books are set in the world of the Elder Races, a complex and well-crafted paranormal world that rivals Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunters world. What inspired you to create this intriguing and vibrant world?

A: I’ve had so much inspiration from so many different places, that I’m afraid I can’t give just one answer.  Nalini Singh’s rich worldbuilding was certainly part of that inspiration, but many other authors were too, from Patricia McKillip to J R Ward, to C J Cherryh.  I read extensively in different genres, so I think I’ve been influenced by a lot of authors.

Q: Lord’s Fall is the latest release in the series. In it, you revisit Dragos’ and Pia’s relationship. Can you tell us a bit about this story and why you gave these two another story?

A: I’d always hoped to be able to revisit Dragos and Pia, and what I discovered, as I wrote successive books, is that the glimpses I gave into their lives wasn’t satisfying for me.  I wanted to write more about them.  Also, in books two, three and four, the various tensions in their lives kept increasing.  That led me to pitch the idea of Lord’s Fall to my editor.

In Lord’s Fall, Pia and Dragos face a lot of challenges.  Pia is dealing with being pregnant with the first ever known dragon baby, and nobody knows quite what to expect from it.  The border tensions between the Wyr and the Elves has continued, hurting both demesnes, and Dragos is critically short staffed, having lost two of his seven sentinels.  Plus they have a cryptic prophetic warning from the Oracle, which will somehow affect their lives.  All of that just begged for its own story!

Q: What is up next for the Elder Races? How many stories do you have planned in this world?

A: I am not quite sure what is up next for the Elder Races.  I’ve completed my contracted work, having finished book six (Aryal’s story), and I have plotted story arcs for the next three books, so I know something great is about to happen.  I have a feeling that in this moment, as I write this blog interview, this is the deep breath before the next big plunge into work.

I’ve also said that for the time being there won’t be any more Elder Races novellas, but I have since been approached by two separate sources for stories.  I haven’t made any decisions about either of them, but I’m glad to know they are on the table for consideration.  I always post news and updates on my blog at www.theaharrison.com, on Twitter @TheaHarrison and on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TheaHarrison, so readers can keep up to date on any developments.  Also!!!  I have hired a new part-time assistant, so we’ll be starting a newsletter in the next few months.  We’ll get a sign up form on my website.  I’ll be sure to post/tweet when that becomes available too!

Q: There are so many larger than life characters in your current series.  Jennifer has a soft spot for Tiago, but must count Dragos as her favorite character. Do you have a favorite in the Elder Races world?

A: I have to say, Dragos is so much fun for me too.  He’s awesome to write, so today, I’m picking him as my favorite.

Q: You have a new series in the works for 2013. Can you share any information about this with readers?

A: Thanks for asking!  The Game of Shadows novels is a duology.  At this point in time, there are no plans for taking the series any further.  It’s another alternative Earth scenario, with a strong urban fantasy emphasis AND a strong relationship.  It’s a big departure from the Elder Races series in that I write from four POVs, not just from the hero and the heroine.

The official cover copy for the first book, RISING DARKNESS, can be found on my blog here:  http://theaharrison.com/blog-post-cover-copy-for-rising-darkness-a-game-of-shadows-novel/

RISING DARKNESS Cover Copy:
USA Today bestselling author Thea Harrison begins an all-new, darkly romantic paranormal saga, in which the fate of existence itself lay in the balance—and the key to victory may rest in the hands of two eternal lovers…

In the hospital ER where she works, Mary is used to chaos. But lately, every aspect of her life seems adrift. She’s feeling disconnected from herself. Voices appear in her head. And the vivid, disturbing dreams she’s had all her life are becoming more intense. Then she meets Michael. He’s handsome, enigmatic, and knows more than he can say. In his company, she slowly remembers the truth about herself…

Thousands of years ago, there were eight of them. The one called the Deceiver came to destroy the world, and the seven came to stop him. Reincarnated over and over, they carry on—and Mary finds herself drawn into the battle once again. And the more she learns, the more she realizes that Michael will go to any lengths to destroy the Deceiver.

Then she remembers who killed her during her last life, 900 years ago…Michael.

As I looked up the cover copy on my blog, I realized it’s been a while since I posted that—back in July!  I think I should repost it on my blog soon.

Q: You started your career writing category romances under the name Amanda Carpenter. How has your writing style changed over the years?

A: I think my writing style has changed in a couple of important ways.  I write with more confidence, and I suspect that can’t help but come through in some way.  Also, my writing voice has become punchier, and it has definitely become earthier.  While I keep thinking it would be interesting to pick up the Amanda Carpenters and flip through them to revisit them, I haven’t done so in years.  I should, though, to remind myself of that part of my journey.

Thanks so much again for having me here today!  I enjoyed the visit.

Question for readers:  which paranormal worlds do you like the best?

Answer Thea Harrison’s question to be entered to win a copy of one of her Elder Races books: DRAGON BOUND, STORM’S HEART, SERPENT’S KISS, or ORACLE’S MOON from Berkley. Romance Novel News will also choose one winner for a copy of LORD’S FALL.

This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only. The two winners will be chosen at random. Readers have until Friday, November 9, 2012 at midnight EST to enter.

We thank author Thea Harrison for stopping by today.

    Hi everybody!

J, thank you for having me on the blog this week! It's been a pleasure to visit with you.

One of the things I love the most when talking about books is reading through the comments and seeing what other people like. I always have a pen handy to jot down ideas for new-to-me reads.

I haven't yet read Elisabeth Naughton, or Sherwood Smith or the Wheel of Time. Thanks for the ideas, everybody, and good luck with the contest!

    Thea

It's good to hear that you have your options open for more Elder Races stories--I can't wait to see what's next in that world (not to mention your brand new one!).

I think today, I'll choose Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark, as I don't want to sit at this computer all day listing series, haha.

My favorite worlds are the alternative earth ones, like the Elder Races, both of Nalini Singh's worlds (Psy/Changeling and Guild Hunter), Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters and I love pretty much everything that Sherwood Smith writes (though hers are pretty fantasy based).

I really like the world of the Elder Races (although I really need to catch up on this series!) and I also really live the world Jeaniene Frost created with the Night Huntress series.

I love the Dark Hunters, Kate Daniels, BDB, and the Wheel of Time just to name a very few. The world is what usually make or break a book/series for me. The exception is Elder Races because I LOVE the characters!!!

I love Thea Harrison and her Elder Races! I don't think I could ever pick a single favorite because so many worlds are different and can't be measured against another. A few of my absolute favorites are J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series, and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. I could go on forever! Thanks for the interview and for the chance to win!
