Summary:
He awakened a need within her…

Cole is successful beyond his dreams. He can have any woman he wants, but there’s only one he can’t stop thinking about. His childhood sweetheart, Ren. He’s never forgotten his first taste of innocent love and the desire that consumed them—or the pain he brought upon her…

But now she belongs to another…

Her long ago brush with submission awakened a longing in Ren that drove her to walk the darker edge of desire. She’s become a beautiful woman at ease with her sexuality and unapologetic about her need for a dominant man. When Cole finds her again, he’s gutted that she belongs to another. Ren’s current master agrees to give her to Cole for a short time, but then she must return to his keeping. And though Cole agrees to this bargain, he knows he will never be able to let Ren go again…

Review:
With all of the press surrounding E.L. James and “Fifty Shades of Grey,” BDSM books seem to have just hit the mainstream. But in reality, books featuring BDSM have been prevalent in erotic romance novels for a while. Maya Banks has been writing books with this theme for years, and just recently released “Sweet Addiction,” the latest book in her sweet series. While it is a deeply emotional and highly erotic story, this book may not be for readers who are uncomfortable with heavy BDSM.

Cole is a character that readers of the sweet series know well. He has been a participant in several scenes, but has never found his own happily ever after. While having dinner one night, he spots Ren, the only woman he has ever loved, having dinner. He is shocked to see her and is even more shocked to see evidence that belongs to the man with whom she is eating. Cole can’t resist making contact with Ren – and with Ren’s current partner, Lucas. This sets into motion a series of actions that has Lucas giving Ren to Cole for two weeks.

Ren is Lucas’ submissive. They have a contractual relationship more than an emotional one. Lucas is rather surprised by how long he and Ren have been together and is mulling over the nature of their relationship. When Cole turns up, Lucas knows that Ren has unresolved feelings for her first love, for the man who introduced her to BDSM. Lucas hopes that by giving Ren to Cole for two weeks, the two will be able to find closure – allowing Lucas and Ren to move forward in their relationship.

Of course, the problem is that Cole and Ren discover that their feelings for each other are as strong as ever, especially after they deal with the issue that caused their breakup. Ren submits to Cole and learns that he is just as much her master as Lucas. All of this makes the two weekend deadline and her imminent return to Lucas emotionally devastating for her, putting her smack dab in the middle of a painful love triangle.

There is a great deal to love about this book. The romantic moments are as plentiful as the erotic ones, although sometimes they are filled with angst. This angst is mostly the result of the love triangle as Ren, Cole and Lucas all struggle with their feelings and worry about their relationships. And Maya Banks writes BDSM relationships and kinky sex very well. Some of the scenes her characters engage in may push one’s boundaries, but they are seriously steamy.

So, what about this one didn’t work well for me? Ren isn’t just a submissive; she is more of a slave – one who gives up the power to make most of the decisions in her life to her master. When she became Lucas’s sub, she moved in with him, allowed him to support her and gave up most of her life (except for her work on children’s books). She agreed to be Lucas’ possession. I find it difficult to read about subs who have decided to give up so much control, voluntarily or not. The fact that Lucas gives her to Cole for two weeks and chooses not to tell her what he is doing bothers me. Banks certainly convinces me that this situation works for Ren, but I find it difficult to read about such situations.

Maya Banks certainly pushes the envelope with “Sweet Addiction,” a highly addicting story that I could not put down. The ending? It was just what I wanted – just what Ren needed. So while I did find parts of this book challenging to read, in the end it is one of the most highly satisfying erotic romances that I’ve read lately, and one of the strongest BDSM books to be published of late.
