convictedConvicted by Dee Tenorio (romantic suspense, Entangled, August 2014, $3.79, 196p)

Summary:
The only thing more dangerous than passion is the truth.

Former Marine and new Sheriff’s Deputy Cade Evigan is hanging onto his damaged soul—and his personal code—by a thread. His current mission? Weed out a violent motorcycle crew from a small mountain town. The problem? Katrina Killian, a woman standing firmly on the other side of the law, smack in the middle of the gang he’s there to destroy. She may get under his skin, but the sultry biker has criminal written all over her. So why can't he see her like any other convict?

For two years, Katrina has been a DEA agent hiding in plain sight amidst a pack of killers, working to put an end to the gang that has terrorized her hometown. The last thing she needs is to fall in love with a man who could blow her cover—and her heart—to pieces, but Cade’s become an addiction she can’t break. Unable to risk either of their lives with the truth, she plays both ends against the middle to keep him safe. But lies can only last so long, and Katrina’s time has just run out…

Review:
Convicted is a book for fans of grumpy and silent heroes.  Cade Evigan is a very tortured guy. His soul didn’t survive the military intact, and he believes he is best off alone. But when his good friend asks him for help, Cade doesn’t hesitate. There is big trouble in his friend’s little mountain town – in the form of a motorcycle club bent on taking control. The sheriff’s department needs help, and Cade is willing.

But nothing goes smoothly. Cade scares the locals with his abrupt and prickly manner, and they are already afraid of the bikers. Then there is Katrina Killian, a woman that Cade believes is on the wrong side of the law. He certainly finds her attractive, but tries to stay as far away from her as possible. However, Katrina has no intention of letting Cade stay away. She plants herself knee deep in his way at every opportunity, almost stalking him. She follows him and even shows up in his house uninvited.

Cade tries hard to stay away from Katrina, after all she has ties to the motorcycle club he is trying to bring down. Yet, Cade cannot ignore her. When she stops coming around, he finds he misses her, rather desperately. Unfortunately, Katrina’s secrets still stand between them.

It was rather refreshing to read a suspense book in which the motorcycle club is the enemy. Here, the club is violent and deadly – and a real challenge for Cade, his friend and Katrina (who actually works for the DEA). The suspense plot is intense (and violent), and I remember sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to find out how it would all work out.

For me, Cade was the star of Convicted. He is gruff, steadfast and principled – and Katrina just steamrolls past all of his defenses. He is a man who desperately needs to be cuddled and loved. He makes this book shine. Convicted is a suspense book with heart – and an unforgettable hero.
