HeartofaDukeVictoria Morgan’s The Heart of a Duke is a historical romance with heart. Morgan tells the story of Lady Julia Chandler who is caught between twin brothers: Lord Daniel Bryant and Edmund, the Duke of Bedford. She is engaged to one - who is a rather nasty character -  but drawn to the other - who is everything his evil brother is not. The Heart of a Duke is Morgan’s second book and is one that is perfect for fans of historical romance. Julia and Daniel’s poignant love story is filled with intriguing twists and turns. The setup for the next book also had me hooked (Brett and Emily, I hope!!!). I could not put this one down. While the ending did not surprise – especially because of the title of the book – Morgan made it work. I was convinces that the resolution was the only way for this one to end. This is an author that readers should watch.

Lady Julia Chandler fears she will be walking down the aisle with a silver-tipped cane if she waits for the Duke of Bedford to seal their engagement. Seeking to quicken his pace, she decides to find her duke, kiss him senseless, and post the wedding banns. It is a good plan, until she mistakes her fiance’s long-absent twin for her duke.

Ten years ago, Lord Daniel Bryant sailed to America to find his fortune and flee his cruel brother who inherited the family title. A cryptic note draws him back to England: Come home and claim your destiny. Before seeking anything, Daniel must first determine who set the fire that nearly took his life and precipitated his flight abroad. Now with the taste of Lady Julia warm on his lips, the stakes are raised higher than before as he seeks to claim both his destiny and the lady of his heart.

“So we are agreed. It is long past time we set a date and stop the run of wagers at White’s.”

She frowned when the smile curving his lips froze and then disappeared.

He rubbed his hand along his neck in that strange, new adopted mannerism of his. “Ah, about that date. There is one minor complication in regard to that.”

“Oh?” Her hand stilled. “And what is that?”

“As much as I wish it otherwise, I cannot set any future dates with you.”

“What are you talking about?” she demanded, a cold chill suffusing her, dousing the simmering embers of their shared passion. “You are not backing out of the betrothal agreement. You cannot. My father would ruin you.”

“Particularly after that kiss,” he agreed quite amicably, leaning close to her as his eyes flashed with a spark of defiance. “But it was worth it.”

She stepped back and fisted her hands at her sides, a hard ball of suspicion curdling deep in her gut. She should have listened to his earlier stammers – or warnings. Hoped it was not too late to do so.

“Your father’s desire to murder me would be for different reasons than you think. I cannot set a date because I am not in a position to do so, which is what I tried to explain earlier.”

She simply stared at him, waiting him out. She was done talking. Done with being young and foolish and reckless. Feared she was about to pay the price for allowing herself to be so for one lovely moment.

“You see, I am not Edmund.”
